On running scandisk, the computer pauses at 27% everytime saying that there is an error on the drive and that its going to try to continue and see exactly what the error is when it performs a surface check. But it can't continue, the thing just freezes up. I figure theres maybe a scratch or something on the hard drive. Should getting a new hard drive fix the problem?

Yes, or if your drive isn't too old, then you might want to try downloading a utility from the drive's manufacturer and use that. Typically, you download a program from the company (Maxtor, for instance) and run it, and it makes a bootable floppy diskette. Then you have the system boot from the diskette and it can do a variety of tests to try to find problems and repair them.

If you need a hand finding the download, give the brand of your hard drive off the label (model number could be useful too) and I'll find the utility. Good luck :D

Incidentally, is the system overclocked? That can bring on hard-drive problems.

Hello
you might want to try going to your hard drive manufacturers web site and download there drive checking software. It usualy will be a program to make a bootable floppy. It will have drive diagnostic tools on it.
