i am getting a amd x2 dual core 4600+ with integrated graphic card.
I intend to buy a 512mb x1900xt card and install it myself.

but i donut know if dell gives a older motherboard because i am getting integrated graphics or should i get the cheapest dedicated video card from dell just to be on safe side to get a proper upgradeable motherboard?

i know i have to buy separate power supply regardless.

UPDATE:

OH MY GOD, i was just stupid and never saw the post bamacre made after my last post and just bought a e521 desktop with an antec 550 watts power supply with a x1900xt video card not realizing it does not support dual slot ( i dint know what it meant).

Now I tried and tried and video card does not fit. Now i come back here to do some more research on it and saw bamacre's post. about e521 not supporting dual slots and what it means. I feel so utterly stupid and useless.

Oh what have I done..............

its going to be such a hassle trying to explain this to dell to return it. what should i do....... please help

All the new chipsets should have a PCIe x16 slot. Just check the specs and it should list that as an expansion slot. Which model are you getting? If its the E521 then they definitely have a PCIe x16 slot.

WAIT!!!

The E521 does NOT support a dual slot video card. They won't fit. You'll need a 7950 GT, X1950 Pro (preferably Sapphire - single slot), or wait for an 8600 Ultra.

But all E521's have a PCIe x16 slot.

Also, if you're thinking of a high-end card like an 8800GTS, you need to find out the specs for the PSU that Dell ships. The high-end cards need a lot of amps on the 12V rail(s).

whats a dual slot video card? are all the newer video cards going to be dual slots?

i know i have to buy a separate 600w power supply!

The power supply in the E520 (and E521) will run a 7950 GT or an X1950 Pro. I've used both, they work fine.

A dual slot video card is just one that takes up two slots, like this one...

(look at the pics)

Where as a single slot card only takes up one slot, like this one...

The E520 and E521 cases (same case, and same system except for mobo and cpu) will not fit a dual slot card the way it is designed.

If you want to do some higher-end gaming, I HIGHLY suggest an XPS 410. The power supply in it can run an 8800 GTS card, I've tested both the eVGA and the MSI in this model. Both work great. Of course dual slot cards will fit in the the XPS 410.

You should be able to return it to Dell. Explain to them the situation, and be sure to include that you will be purchasing ANOTHER Dell product.

You could get a 7950gt which is single slot and return the x1900xt, they're in the same class. That sound a lot easier than returning a whole system.

Did you buy both from Dell? At the same time? If so I would expect them to own some of this problem, as they should have warned you that it won't fit. In any case, call them up, I would be very surprised if they won't work with you on this. The 7950 sounds like a good option.

oh good good, called dell today. i love dell because they are taking it all back and only charging me for the shipping. after i checked the return polichy which says that returning a product even if it still in its package will cost 15% restocking fee (unless, something is wrong with the product from the beginning) but they are returning all the money back and only charging me for shipping.

I will be buying the dimension 9200 then i guess.or something with a dual slot.

thanks all
🙂
