Quick Question - Saran wrap and CPU

When I was applying the Arctic Silver 3 to my CPU, I quickly dabbed it with saran wrap to spread it a little better. Did I kill my CPU/motherboard? I had it on anti-static wrapping and was using my wristband.

I was under the impression that saran wrap was static. My brother mentioned it so I began to worry. :(

Pimpslap your brother. :p

Considering AS themselves suggest a plastic bag, I think you're in the clear. IMO, the whole "Static Discharge" bit is pretty overrated.

And how did you arrive at that conclusion?

Speaking as someone who has accidently destroyed several CPU's by static electricity I'd say that prudence is warranted. In this case, dabbing a bit of grease on the CPU plate using a bit of plastic wrap is not likely to cause a problem. But messing with saran wrap while accidently touching the pins easily could. It takes very little static electricity to damage a microelectronic component - well below the threshold that you can actually feel. In addition the damage can cause sporatic errors that are difficult to trace the damaged component.

I personally believe that a little static paranoia when working with microelectronic components like memory modules and CPUs is an easy insurance policy against the very real problems that can occur.

It's ^ true, a minuscule amount of static can fubar your components. However you should be alright - it's not like you blew the bag up and rubbed it on your hair. :light:

One rule has served me well over the years: ground yourself out before sticking your hands inside the box. I'm not necessarily suggesting a wrist-band (I've never worn one), just discharging any static by touching metal (a file cabinet in my office works great for me), and not moving around much while doing the work, preventing any additional buildup.

Yeah, should be o.k.... But static is a very real danger. I'm a roving tech and generally not too worried about it... but, ground yourself before jumping in, then don't shuffle your feet! Remember a guys machine I worked on a while back... went to open the CD-ROM and got zapped... wore a wrist strap for that one!
Son's machine a few days ago... went to clean the CRT with a damp paper towel. Made the mistake of holding it steady with my left hand, wiping with my right... was like a damn bolt of lightning. About scared the hell outta me... son sitting there wondering where the 5 inch bolt came from! Lucky the monitor still works.
Yeah, static lives so do take care... and it's the ones that don't zap you that will kill the components.

Heh...I was there recently....no kidding. Flat as a pancake too. I stood on a beer can and could see the whole state! ;)

Geez dude, time for a new job...? Several CPU's... I think I would have learned from the first time.

I would try the power switch on the front of the case after the build is complete. If the computer makes it to the desktop, I would begin to suspect that you may not have fried the CPU. However a 72 hour vigil is still in order. Good luck!

Thanks guys, that was a late night freakout question on my part.

It was fine, system's running great. I built mine the next day (the aforementioned one was his) and it's fine, just may be a little hot. I think I'm going to redo the AS3 application process.

Thanks for your help and warnings. :D

(I always use my little wristband just to be safe).

Yeah, but the hole fills up with water, then you have the Croc's in there to deal with!

You handle enough of them, you break a few. <shrug> I wised up and started treating static like it was real after a co-worker and I did a hand-pass transfer while walking down a hallway and zapped a prototype. Before that I suspect that I broke at least one other from static - but I wasn't sure.

Then it's time to call the Croc Hunter!! :p;)
