Quick Question regarding utilizing an older receiver

TV - Optical Out
4 HDMI IN
(hdtv cable box, Mac mini, Amazon Fire Stick, WDTV Live TV)

Will I be able to get Dolby Digital Sound out of the Optical out from the 4 incoming HDMI sources ?

I want to connect that single optical to a receiver so I can get some surround sound.

I don't have the receiver yet but was wondering if this was possible.

You should check the TV manual to see if it passes 5.1 sound out the audio output. Many TVs down sample to PCM audio.

Most TVs will not pass Dolby Digital from HDMI sources to Optical. I found this out a couple of months ago when my Denon 2310CI HDMI ports died and I tried passing 5.1 from a Roku connected to an HDMI port on the TV through the optical to the 2310. It did not work.

They do make HDMI switches, however, that WILL strip off the 5.1 audio and pass it out of an optical port.
