Quick question regarding "root directory and password"

I bought a website and I rent a server at a datacenter. Apparently, when I took over this one website, the administrator failed to tell me all the necessary information to access the server. The operating system is Unix.

What I understand (correct me if I am wrong): I already changed the password to get to FTP, through the help of the datacenter.

Now, what I understand, below FTP lies a root directory that is password protected. Apparently, I don't have the password. Is there a way to get it? I'm afraid the old person will go in and delete the entire database and website.

Can someone break down the basics of Unix for me?

I'm freaken illiterate. The datacenter isn't really helpful. Yes, I'm trying to hire a person who knows what the hell to do.

Thanks,

Ethan

You're going to have to get that password from either the hosting service or former owner.
Once you've got it you can change it to something you want. Until then your effectively locked out of the root directory.
