quick question regarding crossover/ straight cables

quick question- to hook a PC to a router i know yuo need a straight cable, but does it still work if you're using a crossover cable?

depends. some ports on some switches/routers/hubs are auto-crossover enabled, meaning either cable will automatically work. this is a common feature in most newer switches. with a router, it is less likely to be a feature they include. you could read the manual and see if this is mentioned.
