Just a quick question. Do SSD and or 2.5 inch notebook drives require both 5V and 12V or can they run on just 5V. I would likt to power SSD off USB 5V power.
I Just made up a usb to SATA power cable and used an eSATA to SATA cable and it works!
I tried using a external dock and also a 2.5" eSATA enclosure, but the performance was reduced as compared to being directly connected to the SATA port. I think the additional usb2 circuits limited the maximum transfer rate. Also a 2.5" usb3 external enclosure resulted in reduced performance when used with a SSD inside! It seem like the max seq transfer rate was around 180 Mb/sec for any of these devices. More than adequate for a Hard Drive.
