Quick question on saving address books in Outlook 2000

I recently re-formatted a machine and was able to figure out how to back up the e-mail, but for some reason I couldn't export my address book (contacts, or whatever).

When I open the address book, and go to the File menu, the "Import" and "Export" options are greyed out . . . ya know -- as in, not available. This is true even now, after my re-format and reentering every darned contact into the address book manually.

Anyone know why these options are greyed out? Why they aren't available? Do I have to, like, "name" my contact list or something? I don't get it.

Thanks,

abs

Are you using outlook express that came with the OS? If so, search for .dbx files. Usually, in windows, this is in the windows\application data....just keep clicking thru the folders until you find all the .dbx files for Outlook Express, then copy them to a floppy or something. Once you reformat and install your OS, just copy them back to the same folder. It will prompt you if you want to overwrite the exhisting files, say yes. You will have everything back as you left it. I hope this helps. 🙂

To save your "contacts, email, address's" in Outlook you must "export to file" and choose .pst, then save on floppy or network drive and then "import" them back into Outlook. As for why the import export isnt functioning, is the outlook a new install and was your "mail" settings set up in the control panel?

when you click to export to .pst make sure you mark include sub folders.. that way it will back up everything your inbox, outbox, trash can, contact folder...

The reason Import/Export may not be working is that those features weren't installed when Outlook was installed. You can also find the current .pst for your mailbox by right-clicking Outlook Today in the outlook bar, then going to Properties and hitting the Advanced button. The path listed there is where your mailbox (with emails, contact lists, etc) resides.

Thanks for all the replies!

BTW, I'm using Outlook (w/Office 2k), not Express. I'm sure I know how to back-up the address book, it's just that the Export and Import options are not darkened on the the menu (you know whadda mean?) They're visibly there, but are not available for use. I was able to export and import the mail, it's just the address book that has me stumped.

Ladi -- Good tip on where to find the data. I was indeed able to find the outlook.pst file that way. I assume that file contains ALL the mail and contacts (it's pretty big, about 7.2 MB). I suppose if I were to just save that file, and then drop it into the folder in the same location after a re-format, that would provide a solution.

But I'm still curious about why I can't just simply import/export. Don't know why Office wouldn't install that as a feature -- it seems like an extremely basic function. Oh well, that's MS.

Thanks again!
