Quick question on retail AMD processors.

Out of curiosity, is it really true that not using their POS aluminum HS voids the warranty? Just curious, I could see the logic in it if using another HS caused damage to the processor somehow but isn't that a tad extreme?

you can use any heatsink you want, just make sure you keep their heatsink because the serial for the warranty is on it

There's nothing wrong with the heatsinks AMD or Intel package with their processors. The reason using another heatsink voids the warranty is because aftermarket manufacturers don't always adhere to AMD's specifications... you may run across a heatsink with a base that's not flat... or a fan that doesn't move enough air... or a cheap aluminum alloy that doesn't conduct heat well enough.

It's more of a CYOA type of thing. The more people mess with things, the more chance there is that they'll break it and want AMD to replace it.

Let's say you buy a retail amd cpu and you don't even use the included heatsink. What if you have to send the cpu & heatsink back to AMD? Will they see that the thermal pad on the factory heatsink has not been used and deny your warranty?

Or do you have to "melt" the pad a little to make them believe you used their heatsink?

now that's a good question....IMO, they might deny your warranty
