Quick question on MSI K9MM-V & AMD x2 6000+AM2

I have this board, since I still have an 512mb x1650pro I want to use for now, and I checked MSI's website on this board for supported x2 CPU's. My friend loaned me an x2 6000+ AM2 cpu to use, but I'm not sure if it will work with this board, since the list of supported cpu's says the 89w 6000+ will work, but the 125w one wont.

How do I tell if this cpu is 89w or 125w? And what will happen if you put a 125w 6000+ cpu into this board? Will it blow up or anything, or just not work, or what? Thanks in advance for any info I can get on this. I dont want to kill my friends cpu or this motherboard heh.

Thought I'd give a quick update on the x2 6000+ & the k9mm-v I went with. I decided to give the cpu a try in this motherboard & it worked. In fact, this mobo/cpu upgrade went smoother then anything I had ever done before. I had no issues whatsoever. BIOS & WinXP Home picked up everything perfectly.

I upgraded all the mobo drivers to the latest available on MSI website. The mobo was shipped with v1.4 BIOS(v1.6 is the latest). Didnt need to do anything with windows(didnt have to repair or anything) except I had to re-register with Microsoft. I've been running it for a day now with no errors. The CPU temp seemed high I think(was 50C idle), not sure what the 6000+ should be idle, but I took the side panel off tower & have a room fan blowing on it & the vid card, and idle temp went down to ~35C. Hopefully that is better.

I mainly wanted this as a temp gaming rig for America's Army that I play, so I think this cpu + my old 512mb 1650pro AGP will do me for a little bit longer, until I can get the money for a true AM2 system. I went from playing Americas Army at 10fps @1024x768 with all options down/off(my last system was a Sempron 3000+), to now getting 60+fps @1280x1024 with all options on high. I think thats a good increase for what little money I payed for. Seems like 60fps is the max I can get now with this card at this resolution.

Cant wait to get a SATA hd(still using IDE), new monitor(still using ViewSonic 17" CRT), a real am2 mobo & a real graphics card. 60fps is good for me for what I'm doing, but newer games wont cut it on this card I'm sure.

Anyways, just wanted to update that the 6000+ is indeed working for me in this board despite what MSI website says. One question, if everything seems fine for me, should I bother upgrading bios to 1.6? Thanks in advance for the help.

Don't upgrade to bios 1.6 if everything is running smoothly. It may mess up any overclocking or cause memory instability. Had the stability issues with a later bios; had to backtrack to an older bios version on my asrock board.

I don't think MSI was indicating the processor wouldn't run, but that the VRM circuitry was not designed to support processors with TDP in excess of 89W.

By 'not designed to support', I mean for long-term operation. Although it's not going to burn-out overnight, don't be surprised if your board gives up the ghost after a few months (possibly taking the CPU with it).

It's been a month, how's your system so far? I myself am upgrading my mobo to a MSI K9MM-V, among other parts. As you probably know, MSI's site still says that the X2 6000+ is unsupported on this mobo.

Also, are you sure that your CPU is a 125-watt and not an 89-watt? Also, what memory are you using? I'm going with Crucial Ballistix x2 2GB DDR2 800, and I'm trying to find people's experiences with this memory-mobo combo.

On a minor note, I see computer stores bundling the MSI K9MM-V with the X2 6000+.
