well there is duron, which is low end, athlon xp which is middle, athlon 64 which is high to extreme, and opteron which is server /workstation.. and in those classes they have certain hand-picked low voltage cpu's designed for laptops, and that is what the xp mobiles are. they overclock like crazy.

so i'm definetly looking at going for a athlon 64 or athlon xp

Since i'm familiar with Intel, how do i compare AMD vs INTEL ? I looked up AMD Athlon 2200+ at newegg and its saying Operating Frequency: 1.667GHz ....does that mean its comparable to 1.6ghz Intel processor? Thanks again.

This computer is for college (gatech 😀 :beer😉 so I most probably will be gaming.

-samsung 160gb hard drive $100
-case $30
-enermax 350watt PSU $40
-keyboard/mouse $20

TOTAL: $622

I don't mind going a little over. I already have a keyboard and mouse, so that saves $20. That makes the price around 600. So its good 😎

Do you guys think I should try and save a little more money and get a A64? I think I may do that since I'm not going to college until August (so i want to start ordering stuff when I get good deals). Tell me what you guys think and thanks a lot, Its much appreciated. Sorry again for the late response.

I would say yes, if you can save money and get a Athlon 64 do it. It will give you an extra year of life of the computer.

I would suggest getting
2500+ and 9700Pro
instead of:
2200+ and 9800Pro

both setups should be fairly equal in price, and would probably spit out same performance in games, but for everything else 2500+ is faster, and if you overclock it, it would be faster than the 2200+/9800Pro in most if not all games.

Is there a noticable difference between the 2200 and the 2500?

Nab if this is for college, wait until the end of the summer since the A64s will have gone down in price because of the new Socket 939s coming out now. By the end of the summer you will be able to get into a AMD64 3000+ with an nForce3 mobo for the same price as you're paying on this AMD XP-m. Besides, by the end of the summer you'd likely have saved some more money, and then you can pop a few bucks into getting a gig of ram and some other goodies. 🙂

That sounds like a good idea and I think I may do that, but I want to go ahead and start atleats getting an idea of what I want, prices, availablity, etc.

Put it this way, there's more of a performance gap between 2200+ and 2500+ than between 9800pro and 9700pro.

You can check out Toms VGA charts (he has a list of probably 30 video cards, and in it the 9700pro is usually within 10fps of the 9800Pro).
VGA Charts

Having said that, if you pair the 9700Pro w/ a faster CPU, in this case the 2500+, the gap, as insignificant as it is, will get even smaller. In addition, you will have the added benefit of having a faster CPU for everything else.

Having said all of that, an Athlon64 3000+ will destroy a 2500+, especially in games. So if you end up going the A64 3000+ route (which is a bit more costly) you could save money by getting a 9700non pro, and it'll still probably perform like a 2200+/9800pro in games, give or take.

The AMD model ratings (I.E. Athlon 2400+) pretty much correleate to intel's megahertz ratings (I.E. P4 2.4ghz). That said, sometimes they're off a bit, and obviously each processor will excel at different tasks.

AMD's CPU line typically does much more "work" per clock cycle. This means that although they run at lower megahertz, they actually get just as much done anyway. I hope that explains it, I know it's confusing.

And as for the 2200+, we're talking about the 512KB cache 25 watt mobile part which *should* overclock to the same levels as the 2500+ at around the same voltage and will perform the exact same. That's why I reccomended it; it's $11 cheaper for basically the same thing.
