Quick question - lost receipt/Staples manager says can't track CC?

I lost my receipt for a wireless router that apparently was defective, so I called up the nearest Staples and asked what their return policy was regarding lost receipts, and like a lot of retail stores now they said we can trace your credit card to the order so we know you actually purchased it here, otherwise your out of luck. I didn't buy it from that staples though so I drove down to the staples that I got it from, and the manager there claims that there's no way of tracking my purchase and that he can only issue me a staples "cash card".

It didn't really matter to me, seeing as how I was gonna buy something else anyways, but now I do have a $7 cash card that I'll probably forget about. Was the manager BSing? It's not like he has really old systems or anything, as his store opened up within the past year.

Staples can look up receipts based on your type of credit card and if you have an idea of when you bought it. However, the original receipt is still necessary to do a cash return. Those look-ups are usually used for mail-in-rebate receipts when you only need a copy of the receipt.

Usually, anyway. I don't work in customer service, but that's my take on things.

Hes pure BSing. I work at Staples. EVERY transaction within 2 years or so is kept in the store computer. Any manager with half a brain can pull up a reciept from the computer, it just might take about 10 minutes. You do have to go to the store you bought it from for the lookup. How long have you had it? If its been more than 30 days, Staples does not have to issue cash back anyway really, and a cash card is pretty typical. But that manager is pure bsing if you give him the card you purchased it on and he says he can't attempt to look it up. PM me with details if you would like.

yeah I've had it for about 8 days, and I did drive all the way to the staples that I had bought it from just because I thought I would get cash credited back to my credit card. It's not that big of a deal, but it's a little irritating that he would blantly lie about that.

wow, "if this card is lost, stolen, or damaged, present the damaged card or an original staples receipt for this card at a staples US retail store and we will send you a replacement card fo rhte balance remaining at the time this card is deactivated."

Never seen that on a gift card before. That's pretty cool of them. Most places would just say fvck you

I don't know if every CC company is like this or not, but the CCs my school uses you can get them to send you a copy of a receipt. (I know this because I was the treasure of the largest student house complex in the state last year, we had to get many many copies of receipts because the people in hall government who had the cards were stupid.)

Actually, with a receipt, almost all places can terminate any gift card & just give you a new one.

oh, I always wondered why they forced me to take the receipts when I bought gift cards. I'd tell them to throw it away and they'd say no sir I strongly recommend you keep it.

Thats a good idea....you had to sign for it, but Im betting this might be more of a hassle than its worth. Id go back to the staples & ask to talk to the store manager.
