quick question: just how loud are the 1850rpm GTs?

The 965BE on my secondary rig started choking from heat after dropping in a 4850 (was previously using IGP). That, and I would like to start OC'ing my main rig one of these days.

I take it GTs are still the king for near-silent general purpose cooling, and want to order a few. At first I was thinking 1850rpm + throttling would work best, but just realized my fan controllers are physically broken :(

In a word, how loud would be a pair of 1850rpm GTs with a moderately quiet PSU and GPU? My reference point is the equal number of yate loon's which I don't bug me too much noise wise. If the 1850 version is noticeably louder, I guess I should try my luck with the next one down the line (1450rpm).

Also, is there any caveat as to differences between revisions (if any) and where to shop from? For me jabtech seems to be the cheapest with shipping included.

Stick to the 1850, they are equal to or less than yates. More quiet. (I don't write well in the a.m. , sorry) Keep in mind a fan can be wired to run with less voltage (free!) w/o needing a fan controller.

True, I could get 12v 7v 5v out of 4pin molex for throttling if I don't find that quite enough. Good call! 1850rpm it is then. Where did you get yours from? I vaguely remember hearing the nidec variant being quieter, but aren't all GTs made by nidec and marketed by Scythe? Help me out here!

dont do the 7V.

it puts load on 2 different rails... and was said its not recomended.
This is why zalman and other fan companies which need to do 7 include a resistor addon.

But how quiet is a 1850rpm GT?
Your psu fan and HDD will be louder, and i dont care whose its by unless your running a passive PSU or SSD's...
thats how quiet a GT is.

Excellent! Now I am fully committed to the 1850rpm version. Care to answer my second question while at it? :)

I recently purchased a couple of 1850 rpm GTs for my Megahalems and they are quiet. I found that www.koolertek.com had the best price on them although I'm not sure what the shipping would be for the fans by themselves since I had the Megahalems in the order. They didn't add much additional shipping on the fans.

thanks, ordered three and had to pay $3.70 tax and still came out a bit cheaper than the next cheapest at jabtech. $49.70 shipped for three of them.

u will love the GT.

ive recomended over 100 of them, and not 1 person yet has complained on a bad recomendation.

instead they complain on the expensive addiction.

Once u use a GT.. even a yate leaves a bad taste in your mouth despite how cheap it is.

I have a complaint - the more powerful ones w/PWM are not in the common retail channels yet! A 4000 RPM 152CFM 120MM w/PWM would be great and you know it. :)

They are silent.

That's true but then again they are silent as all fans are - when their motors are not receiving power! :p

If they seem silent when running it's because their noise is below your ambient noise level - commonly referred to as the noise floor. They definitely can be heard, however. ;)

They make no motor noise. Moving air noise is good.

Get the paper out of your fan blades! They should NOT sound like a fart!

All do have some motor noise, the GT is smoother than most. Time it after cutting power and you probably won't find a PM drive fan that spins for as long. :D

Frozen CPU may not be around much longer...but yes those fans would be killer. You would not have to run them at WOT BUT the capability is there in case you needed it. Courtesy of PWM.

Nidec Servo website said:
The GentleTyphoon series started with pleasant noise characteristics based on a wide low-noise region and 2-way
vibration-reduction technology. However, the new 120mm version further adds two new features: surge-less PQ
characteristics; and a surge-less, direct, high impetus airflow.
NIDEC SERVO has realized a propeller design implementing a rectifying ring (patent pending).
The new design has provided for the marked increase of airflow in the operating range (an industry first).

I can't wait to see the water cooling tests for these new Gentle Typhoons.

It sounds like they added some good features to the existing design.

Measured on my Megahalems (look at the graph on that pdf to see where the noise goes with some air restriction), my GT 1850 measured the equivalent of 26.5dBA from the intake, 25.5 dBA from the side. YMMV.

GTs are good, but I expected more from them. The minimum my fan controller will allow is 980 rpm (measured by the controller itself), and for that rotation the noise is annoying. The maximum would be 1750rpm, and that is a total pain. I may be getting kinda lost when sticking my head inside the case, but it seems that my slipstream is more silent than the GT (and yes, I work in an ultra silent basement).
I don't know, it's a different kind of noise, and GTs noise bugs me more than the Slipstream's.

I have five 1150 RPM GT's in my new WC rig and they are not at all silent at that speed. I'm getting a fan controller to knock them down to 7V (~800 rpm). They are quieter then a typical fan at the same rpm but still make plenty of noise. At 1800 rpm I think they would be fairly noisy.

what orientation do you have them in?
im curious.

Same question to you also... once again curious.
