Quick question: If using onboard video, can a PCI-E x4 RAID card go in the PCI-E x16 slot?

Inquiring minds want to know before dumping a bunch of $$$.

😀

According to this compatibility sheet, an ASUS N4L-VM motherboard is compatible on the PCI-E x16 slot (I'm looking at an x4 card), which I would take to mean the onboard video would still work (I'm pretty sure Intel's onboard video uses 8 lanes maximum).

I would think one of a few things would happen

1) It doesn't work
2) The bus speed adjusts to the 4x speed of the raid adapter

Interesting question none the less.

There is no reason why a lesser PCIe card should not in a x16 slot. So yes, it should work. Unlike AGP, PCIe is not a graphics only interface even at full bandwidth.

It should work in theory but it's not so clear cut in practice. OP, I suggest to keep searching to hear a first-hand experience on that specific board.
