My parents wont be back in the US until after the tax deadline is long gone, I have their paperwork here, including last years tax returns.

I need to file a delay filing (or whatever its called) with IRS and state of california.

How do I do this? They are currently dealing with some family issues in India and wont be back until like May-June.

file for an extension. You should pay estimated taxes at the time of filing and will be responsible for interest on additional taxes owed later.

You can, but then you owe them teh monies + interests.

Another option might be to use tax software like H&R Block to prepare and electronically file their tax returns for them (or get a tax preparer to do it if it's a complicated return). If I remember correctly, there is an option that allows you to send in a separate one-page signature form that you could send to your parents and then have them sign and mail in.
