Quick Question... How can I disable automatic update notification in Win98SE?

Hey all,

Having a problem where WinUp32 keeps giving me errors. I'm assuming for whatever reason it has something to do with the auto update notification that pops up every so often until you disable it. Typically I forget about the thing until it happens. Well, since it isn't popping up in my system tray (so I can disable it), where/how do I go about disabling it?

Thanks.

Checked both of those, checked Tools tab in IE.

Usually it pops up in the system tray, you right click and tell it you will update Windows yourself... For the life of me I can't seem to find that dialogue/window with those options.

under internet options/advanced, there's a checkbox for automatically check for IE updates.
could this be what you're after?

This feature should be able to be removed either through Add/Remove Programs I think, or by checking the "Show Installed Updates" box (or was it clicking a button? I forget) at the Windows Update website, and then removing the automatic updater option (I believe you can remove installed updates if you click the "show installed updates" option). Personally, as it's an add-on update to Windows, I wouldn't have install it in the first place, as I don't expecially care for things that run in the background checking my web connection and using resources I really don't need. Just my .02 .

Never installed the auto updater at all. I've installed 98SE and ME a couple times, and Windows automatically loads it on. Tried looking it up on the Update Site and in Add/remove programs.

First off, run MSCONFIG like bacillus suggested to see if you can kill it thru the startup manager. The app is actually called Windows Critical Update Notification 3.0. Like LoneWolf15 said, go to the Windows Update site and look for it under installed components. There should be an option there to remove it. If not, try Start > Find > Files or Folders > WinUp32 and then try deleting the files associated with it. You might also want to do the same with your registry if your comfortable making changes there. That can be done by running REGEDIT. Another option is to download Zone Alarm and then set ZA to refuse internet access to it.

Edit: Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Maintenance Wizard and see if you can kill it from there.
