Quick question for people who wear contact lenses

So, I got contacts earlier this year. I've never worn them before, they aren't terribly comfortable, I haven't worn them consistantly for more than 3 weeks at a time. I have a mild astigmatism so I got toric lenses. I'm trying to figure out if its normal for me to feel like I can feel the edges of the contacts on my eyes. What do contacts feel like, either normal or toric lenses? I'm going to try to go to the eye doctor again too, but I am sort of leaving the country Sunday for a while so I might have trouble with that...

I also wear contacts. I also have astigmatism. I also have toric lenses. It's been a looong time since I first got them, but can't recall feeling the edges unless they were particularly dry, which i still get. Seasonal allergies especially set this off.

I assume you've tried "re-wetting drops" ?

Under normal conditions you shouldn't feel them in your eye at all. I can only feel my contacts after about 14+ hours of use, when I start to tire and my eyes are dry. I would talk to your doctor about trying other brands.

I also have astigmatism, but doctors have been prescribing non-toric lenses to me most of the time. The one time I got a toric lens I had the same problem as you and didn't really notice a significant improvement in my vision. If your astigmatism is worse than mine going non-toric may not be an option, but I found regular lenses to be much more comfortable than torics.

I agree. Something isn't right here.

When I get tired the contacts feel heavy and dry. Other than that as long as you keep your eyes clean and brake out the lenses daily you should be fine. If irritation persists contact your optomatrist.

What are toric lenses? Are those hard contacts?

If so, you may think about trying soft contacts..

They aren't as good for your actual eye, but they feel better.

Yep, same. Or if I fall asleep with them in - they tend to get stuck to my eyeballs..but that's not really 'feeling the edge' more than just plain uncomfortable. Remove/clean fixes that.

Toric lenses correct astigmatism. Mine are soft.

My contacts are meant to be used for a month then changed, but in the past 6 or 7 months I've changed them once and I don't ever feel them in my eyes unless I get really tired.

I wear disposables, I can't even tell when they're in, except that I can see. I take them out every night and wear glasses for a while before bed, I really can't tell any difference in comfort.

Funny how that works.

I went to use my camera the other day and thought my autofocus was broken - eventually I realized I didn't have my contacts in.

acuvue oasis will solve this problem. dont get the the freaking biomeds or other "unmarked" boxes from the stores that rip you off saying they got you one thing but it's really another.

Maybe you put the contacts in wrong. They have to be flipped on the right side. If you put them in on the wrong side then you will feel the edges. Look at the pictures on this page http://www.best-discount-conta...to-put-contacts-in.php at the Right and Wrong pictures. When you put your contact on your finger look at it from the side and make sure the edges don't stick out like in the Wrong pic.

If you get the crappy contacts like the generic ones they try to sell then those aren't that good either. I only feel mine dry after like 14+ hours of use sometimes. I use the Acuvue Oasys.

Not necessarily. Just this year I needed to get toric lenses and the optometrist started me out with a pair of Oasis, but they clung to my eye and caused a lot of discomfort and dry eye (which didn't make sense to me). Basically my eye needs some space between it and most of the contact, and so I ended up with the most curved type. It could be the opposite for the OP though.

But yeah, contacts shouldn't be uncomfortable, so definitely try and get that remedied. Even when I first got contacts, they weren't uncomfortable, just felt a little weird.

I have dry eyes, but I can't wear high-moisture lenses. I can feel them all the time. They feel dirty and slimy and won't stay on my eyes properly. I have to use an older style, which I can't feel at all until they get old. Just keep trying different kinds until you find something that works, I say. I wore glasses for nine years before I got contacts, and I GREATLY prefer contacts. YMMV.

I have 1 toric and 1 spherical lens. When I first got them, I noticed the toric lens a lot more than the regular lens. It lasted a while until I just stopped noticing it. The toric was also more difficult to insert in my eye. I have been wearing them for a few years now and I do not experience any of those problems anymore. Definitely make sure you have an appropriate prescription of glasses with you if you are going out of the country.

The only time I've experienced that feeling was when I was first being fitted for contacts, and they insisted on giving me a prescription for their "preferred" brand (Coopervision). Turns out those contacts have a slightly larger diameter than Acuvues, which are probably one of the most common/popular brands. They agreed to let me trial Acuvues after I complained about the fit of the Coopervisions and being able to feel the edges, and I've stuck with the Acuvues ever since.

They are acuvue oasys for astigmatism. Dryness isn't a problem, its the edges of the contacts. The astigmatism is weak, I was prescribed the lowest correction thing for astigmatism that the lenses come in. I'll try calling the optometrist, but I doubt I can get a meeting in before I go. Something else that sucks is that he suggested ordering a year supply of contacts when I was there. I don't know what I will be able to do with them if I need to change contacts.

I wear contacts - No Astigmatism or anything. Worn contacts for years. I only "feel" them first thing when I put them on in the morning for < 1 minute.

You are changing them taking them out every night, right?

Yeah, I don't wear them out over night and I always clean them. They are technically allowed for overnight, and I did that once to see how it felt the next day, but that was an experiment and not regular habit.

I had this feeling when I tried toric lenses also. My astigmatism is so slight I finally decided to just keep using regular lenses and not correct it. Eye places generally have several sample boxes of contacts. Try out three or four brands over the course of a week each. Your eyes will get more accustomed to wearing them, but you shouldn't leave the eye doctor feeling uncomfortable with your final choice.
