Quick question for anyone that owns an HP Office Jet AIO machine

Print a page or make a copy of something on your HP Office Jet all-in-one machine (preferably a 7200-, 7300- or 7400-series machine). Now rub a finger over some of the print on the page. Does it smear?

I just bought my mom a new HP Office Jet 7310 AIO machine, and the black ink smears on the page when touched. Printing or copying, same result. I've adjusted the ink volume and the drying time in the Options section to no avail.

Called HP tech support and they sent me a new ink cartridge (Model 96 cartridge). No difference. Black ink still smears if touched, even after several days (!). It's simply not drying on the page. For whatever reason, the color inks do not smudge a bit. They dry completely.

Since the print heads on these particular machines are in the cartridges themselves, I can't see how any other part of the machine could be at fault. The ink goes straight from the cartridge onto the paper, and of course there's no fuser with an ink jet machine.

Anyone else experienced this with their HP AIO machine?

EDIT: I've also tried 3 different kinds of paper. No difference.

i have a hp office 6110 aio and it smears alittle but usally dries after 10 secs or so. Maybe you can try some generic ink and see if it helps.

Thanks for the feedback, Shawn. I've noticed it smears less after it has dried awhile, but even after 2 or 3 days it'll still smear a little if I rub my thumb over the print. But I can do the same with the color ink and it's dry as can be.

I'd think the likelihood of having 2 bad cartridges in a row would be slim, but who knows. Maybe I will try some generic ink. BTW, do you know the cartridge number of the black ink you use? Is it the Model 96 that I'm using?

Anyone else have any similar experiences?

Thanks. I get over to Fry's from time to time, so I'll check that out.
