Quick question, does defragmenting corrupt audio video files??

Hi guys i was wondering does defragmentating the hard drive corrupt audio or video files

just wondering because its moving files and whatnot u know...

nope, defragmenting shouldn't effect the data on the hard drive that way at all

The pieces of the file are just scattered all over the hdd and defragmenting puts them all close together.

Remember, this is a computer. Computers are 100% accurate as far as math and operations unless of course there was user error or a malfunctioning part. The move commands would not corrupt your data unless your hard drive failed at that very moment... which goes without saying you'll lose your data.

Fragmented video files typically don't exist in the first place, as they are written at the same time and don't change - although I suppose if you were low on space and had a huge video file it could be fragmented - but moving things around won't mess any data up, even if you did it many decades ago.

Unless there is a bug in the defrag software or the filesystem driver or the hard disk controller driver or the hard disk firmware, etc. Dying hardware is only one of many variables involved.

Of course they exist and they're a lot more likely than completely contiguous video files. I just looked at a directory of video files on one of my filesystems and only 1 out of 93 files had only 1 extent, one of them even had over 1000 extents.
