I prefer glossy screen for high contrast.

Need to order 2 today... Ok a couple more questions, sorry:p.. are they tough/sturdy relative to others and do they have illuminated keyboards?

Thx

I can't speak to glossy - but the T61 can be had with a 15.4" WSXGA display. They are extremely rugged and well built (see thread below.) My T60 keyboard is illuminated by a small LED in the top part of the display frame. It works in a dark area. (I often forget it is there.)

I believe that there are no Thinkpads with glossy screens.

They are sturdy and tough, more so than any other laptops out there (other than Toughbooks).

Thinkpads have a small LED that corkyg pointed out but personally it isn't as good as illuminated keyboards. It is better than nothing though

Thanks guys i only ordered one t61 15.4' stripped with linux came out to $744 shipped. ill see how it is before giving it my dad.

i would like another notebook for me though maybe you could help with some recs?

Ideally it would have a high contrast glossy screen.
-very tough and well built
-illuminated keyboard
-around 5 lbs or less not a monster
-largest screen possible within that mass requirment
-performance doesn't matter as anything can run word/excel/firefox

I guess my qustion is so 'quick' anymore:p

thanks again guys

14" Lenovo T400 when it comes out in about a month. It will have a very bright (and battery-saving) LED Backlit screen. Be prepared to pay a lot more than for the current 14" Thinkpads though. (The current model really has everything you want except the glossy screen, which I don't think is that big of a deal esp. since the Thinkpad's screen is pretty bright).

Thanks 996GT2 - Does the T400 have backlit keys?

I'm also considering the Dell XPS M1330 if you have any thoughts on that I'd appreciate it.

My advisor has a M1330. Nice machine, although the Vista/MediaPlay Direct combo can suck if you are going to reformat and put Windows XP on it. The partition got messed up twice and I had to fix it.
Other than that it's nicely equipped and I'd consider one if I were in the market of buying a non-Apple laptop.

There isn't information yet as to whether the T400 has a backlit keyboard...however, my guess is that it will just maintain the ThinkLight from the current thinkpads.

The M1330 is also a good choice, although it can get kinda expensive once you pick a fast processor, LED screen, and other higher-spec components. For example, at Lenovo the upgrade to a 2.4 GHz T8300 costs between $30 and $50 depending on model. If you wanted to upgrade to a T8300 on an M1330, it would set you back $175. Definitely a big difference in pricing.

My analysis of the photos of the new X400/500 models confirms that thought. The LED light on the frame that shines down on the keyboard is the "Thinklight," and really, it is quite adequate, even in a dark room or airplane.

Appreciate it guys.

I will see the T61's 'thinklight' soon enough to see how adequate it is. Can't wait to feel a legendary thinkpad. I bought it for my dad but I'll be playing with it first before taking it to his house.

Ruled out the 1330 upon discovering the keyboard not being lit at all. Definity a beautiful machine though and slot load is an elegant feature.

I have been doing a lot of research into notebooks the last two days (what a pain:p)) and at the moment I'm leaning towards either the Apple Mac Book Pro or Alienware m15x. Both have the features i'm looking for such as a backlit keyboard, glossy screen and are reasonably well built. I can get stripped versions for around $1500-$1700. Perfectly adequate since i'm not gaming. The only issue may be size but i guess we all wrestle with the notebook size/weight compromise don't we? Whatever I get is a huge upgrade from this cheap presario I currently use.

Thanks again guys for answering my 'quick' question(s):)
