We want to buy an HD television, but im not completely sure as to what the difference is between Full HD and HD ready. I understand that Full HD means that the screen can display video at 1080p, whilst HD ready can be anything above 720p. Does Full HD however also mean that there is an HD tv-tuner built into the TV? and are there any other differences which im not aware of?

Thanks

HD Ready just means the TV doesn't have a tuner in it. Full HD does mean 1080p. But it is possible for a TV to both be 1080p and "HD Ready", meaning its just a 1080p monitor without a tuner in it.

Small correction Slick5150; HD Ready is a monitor without an HD tuner. It may or may not have a regular TV tuner, but it cannot tune to the HD channels.

That's probably true, but I've never seen an HDTV with an NTSC tuner and not an ATSC tuner.

They used to exist. They totally suck, as no one sold ATSC / QAM tuners (they did, just hard to find and expensive)

How could you have never seen them? They were all over the market several years ago. My sister still has her 50" Toshiba HD Ready set. Not a big deal as most people end up using a cable box or cable box with DVR that gets fed into an input.

Full HD doesn't mean anything, although it usually is used in reference to 1080p. There's no standard for "full HD" certification or anything - there are already TVs which are 1600p, albeit not in the consumer market.

HD-Ready means no ATSC tuner, as others have mentioned. I have a TV that's HD-Ready and only has an NTSC tuner.

Just ask which TV to get, Don't bother doing anything else on ANAND. OR any other forum. Waste of everyone's time

Get Samsung LNT, if ur going for LCD,

Plasma Get Pioneer.

DON"T PAY LESS THAN 1500. "this includes Sale/discount, W/E" "NOT SHIPPING.

Easiest/laziest Solution.

It should be this way cuz it is a material item.

They should put this in the lcd buyer's guide for "TV"

HD is 720p and above. "Full HD" has been used to distinguish HD TVs with tuners built in, when those "HD Ready" sets were more prominent.

"True HD" is the marketing gimmick to distinguish the 720p form the 1080p sets. Depending on your needs, 720p could be good enough. But iirc, "Full" and "True" have been and are used to distinguish separate concepts.

It is SO, not the worst advice ever, You really think that ANY of the stuff they put into specs sheet on the box will matter that much. Truth is it will not.

You do all this research and for what, yes you know a little more about the thing you bought to brag to friends and what not, but the only thing that can tell the difference is a color prob.

All the extraneous research has already been done, As soon as the product came out, enough crazed people scrutinizes for you so you don't have to.

My advice has been the best so far because, it does not involve any babble that 90% of the users out there will ever need to know.

Pioneer and Samsung are both Leaders in the field, That and a price tag on a material item,, HOW is that NOT the way to buy something.
