Quick Question: Default Voltage?

I hear a lot of people say, "I overclocked my cpu to this speed on it's default voltage"

What is default voltage? I looked up my processor as it said to do in the overclocking sticky and intel says my processor runs anywhere from .85V to 1.5V. That's a pretty vast range. I have also heard that when the VCore is set to auto when overclocking the motherboard tends to give the processor more power than necessary.

I want to see how my processor overclocks on it's "default voltage," whatever that means, but I have no idea what I should start at voltage wise.

Can anyone clarify this for me?

Auto setting is it's default voltage.
 
No, auto is not default voltage. Auto is basically whatever the motherboard feels like giving the chip, at stock clocks it normally is default but ive seen mobos give an i7 1.5v on auto.

To find ur default voltage ur gonna need to look at the VID
 
There is no such thing as default core voltage. However, many LGA1156 owners consider 1.20V shown in CPU-Z under full load as default core voltage.

p.s. Even the core voltages set in BIOS are the same on two MBs, the actual core voltages can be different depending on the brand, BIOS version and Drooping voltage setting.

There is no VID shown on both LGA1366 and LGA1156 CPUs.
 
I should have mentioned, I'm using a LGA775 CPU.

There doesn't seem to be a consensus as to what the default voltage really means.

The Core Voltage in CPU-Z at full load is ~1.312V, so I'd a assume slightly higher in BIOS.

Should I assume that is the default core voltage?

Also, I wanted to make sure I'm not mixed up: Does VID=Core Voltage? (the intel specs page lists the voltage range on my cpu to be from .85-1.5 VID.

EDIT: So it seems that the VID is the voltage that's set in the BIOS and the Core Voltage that's displayed in CPU-Z is the actual voltage (with vdroop). At full load the VID is reported at 1.35V (via coretemp) and the Vcore is reported as 1.316V.

So since I'm not overclocking and (I think) the VCore is set to auto in BIOS, the default BIOS VCore for my processor is 1.35V, right?

By the way, the reason I ask this is because I don't want my motherboard to overvolt everything and make in instable. I have difficulty with my motherboard giving the northbridge too much voltage and that thing gets HOT! I have no way of knowing how to set that voltage on my own because I don't what a "normal" voltage is, therefore I can't use that as a starting point.
