Quick question before going to buy part

I bought a new oil filter yesterday along with all the oil I need to do an oil change. I was told that I should replace a rubber washer that is at the oil filter. Is this called something or can I go to the parts store and just ask for "The rubber washer for the oil filter"?

Thanks all 🙂

The oil filter comes with a rubber gasket. When you remove the old one, you should look to make sure the old rubber gasket is off, lube the new gasket on the new filter by covering it in some oil(old or new is fine) and then stick it back on the filter and screw the filter on.

The oil drain plug usually comes with a metal washer but thats not something you should ever replace unless you lose it.

Yea I am trying to call up the guy that said I should replace it. I have no idea what he meant. I took off the oil filter and saw the rubber gasket on that(and the one I will be replacing it with) so I was like...well that can't be it. Then there is a metal washer on the drain plug....so that's not it either. We'll see what he says cause right now I think he's crazy.

Some companies recommend using a crush washer on the oil drain plug - just like it sounds, it compresses when you tighten the drain plug. My Subaru does and I pick up one with every oil filter, like an extra $0.20 or something.

? I thought the rubber gasket is pretty much stuck to the oil filter.... unless there is ANOTHER one on the engine side (which I never can get a good look off)

Might be the internal element style filter used on some european cars. It's just the paper element without the metal can. They'll need a new O-ring, but it usually comes with the filter.

There should be one, and only one, rubber gasket @ the oil filter. That gasket almost always comes installed into the top of a new filter. if the old one doesn't come off with the old filter, then it's stuck to the filter mount and you'll have to remove it (NOT with a metal tool!)

Double gasketing an oil filter can be disastrous. there's a LOT of pressure going through that union, and oil will squirt out.
