I just bought some whey protein. Should I drink a protein shake both morning and night every single day or only the days that I workout? I'm doing a 3 day split and my goal is to get bigger.

take it every day.... i try to spread out my protein intake during the day, so i take one when i'm hungry or inbetween meals... however you get the protein into your body, as long as it's not ALL in one shot.... oh, and after a workout is a def. must

Thanks.

Whats the window to get protein into the body after the workout? immediately after? or within 1 hr is fine?

Be sure you get some sugar source(s) with a high glycemic index after your workout, too, to replenish your glycogen stores.

Take it throughout the day everyday. Your muscles take a number of days to recover and grow after a workout, so you need it on off days as well. Since the body cannot store protein in a readily accessible manner as easily as it can something like fat you need to be constantly taking it in. Thus morning is important (since you've gone without protein for many hours), and before bed (because of the reason just mentioned). Also take it throughout the day. Ideally you'd be taking in protein every 3 hours, but that's too difficult for most people. Just take it in the morning and at night and try to take in other protein sources throughout the day if you can.

It's recommended to take protein in right after a workout as well, but my thoughts on this are that since food takes a long while before it's even providing your body with any energy it makes sense to take in protein pre-workout (as long as you're not bloated and unable to workout properly). This way you get a jump on digestion so that the protein is available sooner after your workout than if you took the protein source after working out.

Exactly, which is why I mention the high GI foods after a workout- they are digested quickly.

the thing is tho, when you take supplement shakes, it gets digested a little faster, so if you're taking shakes, imho, that's the best time to take it... the before workout thing sounds like a good idea too, but for me, it would make my stomach be all bleeehhh during my workout...

I can relate to that. the best thing is to just do what you feel works best for you, based on academic knowledge and expiramentaion.
