Quick Question about Upgrade Version of Vista

I was planning on waiting to buy Vista until the fall but the CompUSA closing near me has the upgrade version for $155.

I was originally planning on getting the OEM version to avoid always having to install XP first when I do my reinstalls. Have any good ways been found to workaround the must install XP requisite before installing the upgrade version of Vista. Like, can I just use my valid XP CD Key? Or is is still necessary to always install XP first and then do an upgrade? And if this is required and XP is installed, can I still do a clean install or will it do an upgrade install only?

There is a registry hack out there, but the easiest thing to do is the double install.

Step 1: Boot to the DVD setup. When it asks for you product key leave it blank. It will then ask for what version you are installing. Select the version that you purchased.

This installs a trial version of Vista.

Step 2: Once Vista is installed insert your Vista DVD and "upgrade" this time do an in place upgrade and use your product key.

You now have a real, fresh install of Vista without touching your old XP media.

More on this.

Thanks for the info. The state of affairs is about where it was a few months ago requiring the preinstallation of another operating system but from what I have been able to gather, you can select a clean install and the old version is copied over to windows.old.
