I'm thinking about buying a tivo from a fellow anandtecher, and just want to know if I have to subscribe to tivo's service to be able to do manual recordings? Thanks.

no... i think the tivo service is only if you want the imbedded program guide with one touch recording....

i'm not sure tho a tivo fanatic might have a better opinion.........

no manual recordings work fine. in the next version of the OS 2.5 which you will get in fall, no subscription manual recordings will work even easier, althought they work now also. but I will tell you tivo w/o the service is totally different than with the service.

Could not tell you for sure, but I think that you can. I just recently bought a ReplayTV and have been searching through the following site Forum Link and they have several forums on all the different types of PVRs. It takes some searching, but just like Anandtech, you can find lots of good information if you put in the effort.

Good Luck, and let us know what you find out....:D

Will I be able to schedule a recording ahead of time if I don't have the service?

You just have to schedule by time instead of selecting the program from the list.

Ok cool then. I just don't believe in paying for info I can get for free online or in the newspaper (tv listings).
