Quick Question about playable resolution with crossfired HD7870 Myst cards

I have a pair of watercooled HD7870 Myst ed cards from PowerColor in Crossfire. I'm about to buy a new monitor and was thinking of going for a 32" 2560x1440 monitor like the HP OMAN. I know these cards are kinda old, but I'm thinking they should be able to drive descent framerates at that resolution, but what if I went for a 4k monitor? What could I expect at 3840x2160 playing common (not too extreme) games? (Edit: I'm currently playing Titanfall, World of Warcraft, Starcraft 2, Diablo 3, MechWarrior Online, and probably getting Titanfall 2 next)

Any advice would be appreciated. I'm going from an older Hanns-G HH281 28" monitor that only does 1920x1200

Thanks All, and Happy New Year!

Performance wise, each one of these cards is about as fast as a 7950. So that would put it in the same ball park as cards like the R9 280/280x/285/380/380x and GTX 960/1050ti.
The limiting factor in your case would really be the 2GB framebuffer.

I think it'd be best if you were to take a look at R9 285/380 2GB and GTX 960 2GB benchmarks to get a better idea of where you would be standing performance wise. Find the games you want to play and compare.
I'm thinking 1440p will be alright for the most part, since you won't be playing "extreme" games as you put it, but 4K will be pushing it. I can't really comment more without knowledge of said games or the rest of the system specs!

2GB and Crossfire being a coinflip are gonna hurt you hard.

You can test the games you have now at higher resolution with VSR. In Radeon settings, under Display, enable Virtual Super Resolution. Your card, a Tahiti, can test 2560x1600 VSR on a 1920x1200 monitor. You cannot test 4K VSR with your card though.

As for Titanfall 2....

GameGPU still used a 7990 in many of this tests. While this would be faster than 7870XT Crossfire (it's 7970x2), I'm showing it to you more to get an idea of if Crossfire even works. The 7990 has 3GB though. Your card is close to a stock 7950 non-boost in performance, but it only has 2GB so it will suffer more.

You will have to use rather low settings at 4K to get playable framerates. Definitely 2560x1440 if you're going to keep your current cards, and even then you will sacrifice a lot. It's impossible to find the 7870XT in current game benchmarks, but you could dig around for recent reviews that still include a 270X 2GB. It's 1280 cores vs the 1536 you have, but clocked a little higher and importantly the same VRAM size. Very similar performance for when Crossfire is not working.

See the 270X for Titanfall 2 here:

Obviously you will have to reduce settings to get it playable.

I wish upgrading the cards is was an option, but I can either upgrade the monitor, or the cards, but not both. I have overclocked the cards a bit, and the water is pretty much silent so it's hard to replace them. Going with the 32" 2560x1440 monitor might be the best bang for my buck at this time. Thanks for the input, especially about the VSR, I hadn't heard about that.

Happy New Year,

older 7xxx radeons with the fans on are still worth something, coin miners will still buy them up at the right price so they've got some legs yet on them. Not sure how well you'll do with the Kraken +corsair h55. Probably makes more sense to keep those and reuse them somewhere

What do you think a PowerColor HD7870 Myst + Kraken X10 + Corsair H55 would sell for on Anandtech? I have the original heatsinks, but the fans are gone.

The Kraken x10 + H55 would be worth more than the 7870s

I think you might be able to clear 150 for the lot. But you might be better off selling them separately.

Keeping one of the x10 + H55 sets to put on a 290.

You should be able to make the change over for $50 out of pocket.

A worthwhile upgrade in my opinion.

I ended up buying a pair of XFX RX 480 8GB cards from Amazon to replace the HD7870s. I'll keep my monitor for a while longer, and maybe find a good deal on a 1440p monitor after I get my tax refund. I'll get new fans for the HD7870s, and eventually part out the lot.
