Quick question about overclocking CPU

I bought an open box mb from Newegg recenlty to replace the same motherboard model. Alghought the 2nd board was an open box I had it a month and it overclocked stable at 3.4ghz at loads 56c which is pretty good.

Everything was going great until I purchased a Radeon 4870 512mb card to replace my old Geforce 7900gt. I uninstalled all the Nvidia drivers and installed the new card. Ugraded to the latest Catalyst drivers and booted up Windows. Once I got things settled I began to overclock again and wouldnt u know my cpu wouldn't get above 2.7ghz without locking up in the bios?

What gives is there any issues with the Catalyst drivers?

If it locks up in bios, it has nothing to do with drivers. That would be after windows is loaded or trying to load.

Sounds like the 4870 is using power much differently than your old 7900. You could try gingerly adjusting voltages in bios.

I solved the problem. Seems that the new GSKill ram I ordered off Newegg had different cas latency (6) and different timings. I removed that and used two 1 gb sticks and one 2 gb stick of ram I already had for a total of 4gb. All four are identical in specs and I was able to overclock back up to 3.4ghz again.

Thanks for your help.
