Quick question about Jury Duty

I have jury duty tomorrow. But I was told to be on call for 5 days starting on 5/30/2006. does that mean that I have to go in tomorrow, as well as wednesday, thursday and friday? I don't think this would be possible for me because I have to go to class on those days.

Yes.
 
You should have a number to call. If it says that your group needs to appear, then you need to go. If it says call at the same time tomorrow, then you're clear for the day.


EDIT: what county do you live in? Some counties have jury duty status on their websites, if they have a website.

I'm in LA county. thanks for the info. I re-read my jury summons and there is a small text note area that says

"5 days on call, 1 day or length of a trial" so I'm assuming I get called to show up for 1 day, and that's all. If i get called for a trial on that day, and the trial last longer then I have to stay longer, right?

why didn't you respond to the summons with an explanation of why you would be unable to attend? i would think college classes, especially during finals time, would be an easy "Get out of jury duty" card.

why didn't you respond to the summons with an explanation of why you would be unable to attend? i would think college classes, especially during finals time, would be an easy "Get out of jury duty" card.

Not these days. It can get you a delay in serving jury duty, but it won't get you a dismissal.

the process of registering was completely automated over the phone, and I had no one to talk to. The only options for me to reschedule over the phone is medical reasons, and financial hardship.

Then when I called in this weekend to the automated message to check if I have to come in, they said in the very last minute that I can postpone my jury duty if I have school, but I have to do it on the friday before the week of my juty duty. Which is funny because they said that I have to call in for my jury time on the weekend before, which is when they tell me I can post pone my jury duty if I have classes, which really doesn't correlate with the time frame they have for people.

Oh well, next time I'll know, this is my first time, i'll have to talk to the people there tomorrow morning.
 
I don't know about your situation, but I'll tell you how mine went:

It said on the envelope I received to call one day before the jury duty date to make sure you are needed. So I called and I was needed. I went there, had a bit of trouble finding the free public parking space and the roads were terrible in downtorn Raleigh. Got to the courthouse, showed the paper to the lady and sat down. For more than an hour. Or even more.

It is extremely boring waiting there. There had to be about 125 or a similar number of people there waiting. They showed us a tape about the process etc. So finally the time comes and they put us into groups of about 25-35 and took us to the rooms where the trial was. I was told that the trial may last several days so be prepared. They normally ask you if you have an urgent need and cannot be there. But usually you'll have to be there.

I came extremely close to being picked. My heart was pounding as they kept calling the names for the jury. Those lawyers kept dismissing the jurors and I was one of the few people left. Anyways, it was a good experience and not too bad.

And I got $12 in the mail a few weeks for showing up for jury duty. 🙂

I think what your being told is that if you get picked for jury duty, be prepared to serve for 5 days.

Being a student usually automatically qualifies you for "financial hardship" status how we usually use the term. I have no idea if it will get you out of/delayed jurry duty though.

Just show up and tell them that you're honored to serve in the cause of justice, and that you'll do your best to be 100% objective and fair in your considerations.

Lawyers HATE that...you're too unpredictable. They'll be trying to manipulate your emotions, and you won't fall for it.

So, they'll dismiss you as a potential juror. Home free!

Served the same jury duty, hoping I don't get picked again. (But knowing my luck...)

Anyway here's how it goes

You are on call basically. You must call in every day for the next 5 days. If they do not need you, they will say "Your group was not called in, please call again tommorow"

IF YOU ARE LUCKY, you don't even have to go to the courthouse. My father, brother, and girlfriend all got out this way, but lucky me, I had to go because my number was called.

Anyway if you are called you must go to the courthouse by the time they stated. Can be anywhere from 8:00AM to 10:00AM. You must be there for roll call/sign in or you are considered missing.

You sit in the room and wait for the entire day. If the case is dismissed, you leave and ARE DONE. No more jury duty for another 18 months.

If the case is not dismissed, they will randomly call names into the court room. If you are not called by the end of the day, you ARE DONE. No more jury duty for another 18 months.

If you are called they read you what you are suppose to do and the lawyers cross examine you. You are now in unlucky zone because you now have to reshow up to court the following day.

When you show up to court the next day for the case, you will go through a phase where the lawyers may dismiss you if they find any bias in you. (Now is a good time to pretend you have a BIAS since it will get you free) If you are dismissed at this phase, you ARE DONE. No more jury duty for 18 months.

If you're Joe A Citizen and can't tell a lie, they keep you. You must now serve on the case until it is done. This can be anywhere from 1 day to 3 months. Typically you will not run into a criminal case, but you never know.

😀 O RLY? Well, I wouldn't mind so much being a juror, but I have other obligations that I find to be more important right now (nearing finals week, and having 3 [engineering] projects I need to finish in 2 week) I'd be more than happy to serve once I'm out of school.
