Quick Question about insurance? If I go to my dealer for body/motor repair after an accident.

Update: Just came back from my VW dealership. The Geico adjuster advised that I have VW do the transmission repairs, and the complaints about the interior of the car. He claimed that the shop that he represents would not be able to handle the transmission part of the job, and that the car was just too new to just "piece it back together."

I have no idea if they want to see if the accident caused the damage, but I don't care. I got it where I want it. 🙂 I guess I was worried for nothing...

-------------------
The shop they sent me to, looks extremely sleazy, and I did not like the quality of their work. Geico is telling me because I refused repair after inspection there, I am no longer "qualified" to use their "express repair facility."

Does this mean that they WON'T pay the dealer prices, since they gave me such a low estimate on damages? ($1300...)

My car has ~5500 miles, and suffered transmission + body damage, but the Geico adjuster said he saw no need to replace the transmission.

My Clutch is slipping horribly, and it sounds like like this?

Can someone answer quick, they have put me on the spot.

I just filed a claim and with part of the paperwork was a slip that said I could take it anywhere I wanted to and didn't have to use their shop. This is in CA. USAA insurance.

Yeah, but the dealer is going to rape them. I think I have unibody damage too, but the adjuster brushed me off, saying he can't tell for sure unless he takes the car apart.

My front headlight is 1" forward, from a hit in the rear lower bumper...the frame under the bumper took the entire hit. He refused to acknowledge it. It's not a hit on Geico really, I just think the shop is bad...and it's very poorly and unprofessionally run.

If I were you I'd start looking at getting a lawyer. We're not talking about a few hundred bucks - that's an expensive car, and saying the wrong thing could end up putting you in a bad situation.

Only GEICO can answer that question. I have no clue what the ramifications are of not being able to use their express repair facility. It may just mean that it's going to take longer to fix your car. Which makes me think that it's possible that it will be fixed correctly.

You really have to talk to them to find out. Unless there are some GEICO employees here.

First you are able to have your vehicle repaired where you would like. If Geico tries to say otherwise, contact the states insurance board.

Second their "express repair facility" just is a place certified by Geico to inspect vehicles and repair them. You should be able to get it repaired at one of these regardless of what you did after the initial inspection.

Third they won't pay dealer prices, but more often then not will use refurbished/used parts. They have to pay to repair your vehicle to pre-accident condition using like parts. That means that for a 2005 car, they can put on 2005 parts that were used.

Fourth find out from a repair shop you trust what is damaged. Get an estimate from your own shop.

Fifth a slipping clutch is going to be difficult to prove was from the accident.

Sixth if you have specific questions feel free to PM me, I work for an auto/home insurance company (one of the top 5 largest carriers).

EDIT: I am not a Geico employee, and this is AFAIK unless otherwise stated in your own policy. I am just offering the knowledge that I know of from my experience in the industry, but this is not to be taken as fact for your specific situation.

Every state has laws that covern the insurance industry...some state insurance departments are mere pawns of the insurance industry itself, while others are actually citizen advocates.

In Kahleeforneeya, it's illegal for an insurer to require you to have the repairs done in "their shop," but it IS legal for them to have "preferred shops" that give them a better rate and use cheaper after-market parts instead of factory original parts.

You MAY be able to find your answer here: http://www.ins.state.ny.us/auto/2008/auto08tc.htm

If not, there should be contact numbers you can use to ask.

 USAA is the best. I used to work in the car rental industry and they were by far the easiest to work with. They really look out for their customer's best interests.

My wife and I have home, auto, and life insurance through USAA.

BTW-I don't know that I'd go with a dealership body shop either. Some farm their autobody work out to local shops which may or may not do the best work. Others just have horrible body shops...poorly run with employees who don't care.

in virginia, i take it to anyone i want and they do an estimate and work with the insurance company, only thing i have to do is drop off car and pick it up later.

BUMP. Geico actually recommended that I take it to VW themselves to sort out the car. The adjuster seemed to not trust the shop he represents with the repairs. So either he was a nice guy, or just wants confirmation from the dealer that the damage to the transmission is indeed from the accident, and not me...lol

Little do they know, I have mechanical breakdown insurance from them also... 🙂
