Quick Question about Hard Drive Install

Ok, I may be an idiot and missing something, but when I bought my Seagate drive (used as my C: Drive) it is a 120gig SATA 7200 Baracuda, but when I installed it, and put it in, and went to install Windows, it said it was a 111 Gig. Is this normal? Am I susposed to get screwed out of 9 gigs?

Also, Im just curious, Is it best, for read time and performance on a PC to have a hard drive with the OS (XP PRo) on a drive, but install games on another? will the computer run faster and seek faster overall if "basically" just the OS and other essentials are kept on the Main drive? I always wondered that, figured I would ask.

thanks

Plainly... Yes, you are supposed to get screwed out of 9GB. Welcome to the world of hard drives. If you buy a 500GB HD you only get about 430GB out of it for example. :disgust:

It doesn't make much difference if you have the OS and programs on the same HD or not.

Ok, wel lthanks for the quick answer, But im starting to get some lag, and most of the drive is full, is there a certain sweet spot % of free space you should keep on a drive? I may just be due for a reformat.

As low as possible really... but under 75% or so would be optimal IMO.

Make sure and do your defrags regularly too. I think windows suggests 12% free disk space for a defrag so that should be the max on how much you sould use if you are using the HD for programs.

Videos, music, and photos don't require defrags and you can fill a hard drive 100% full if it is exclusively for those things.

Edit:
Anyone have any idea why the word "should" up there is showing up "sould" when it posts? It is correct in the text box here.

Fixed 😛

Hard drive manufacturer's defintion:

1 gigabyte = 1,000 Megabytes

Microsoft definition

1 gibibyte = 1,024 mebibytes = 1,073,741,824 bytes

-----------------------------

120 gigabyte hard drive = 120,000 MB

120,000,000,000 bytes/ (1,073,741,824 bytes/gibibyte) = 111.75 GB

------------------------------

That pretty much explains it
