Quick Question about Dual Channeling DDR Memory

So say I have 2x256 DDR. 3 slots on the mobo.
1 is by itself, 2 and 3 are closer together.

For it to work in dual channel, should I put the 256 sticks in 1 and 2, or 2 and 3?

What if I put in another 1 x 512 stick in? Should the layout then have slot 1 being 512 and 2 and 3 having 256 for dual channel?

Dunno check the manual. Some boards got 2 colored slots the same colored for the dual channel slots. Using all 3 disables dual channel

Manual says nothing about it. Just a Quick Start Guide with details on how to reset CMOS etc.
Using all 3 disables dual channel? I guess that would make sense, dual = 2 and all...

But anyways, good input. I'm off for the night.
