Quick Question About DDR Speeds

Is it OK to put in lets say DDR 3200 (400Mhz) into a motherboard setup that calls for DDR 2100 running at 266Mhz. I'm currently looking to build my first system since to my Intel 486 days of High School. I'd like to buy DDR 3200 and a mobo now and then reuse the memory when Intel releases its 800Mhz FSB Processor and Dual Channel 3200 DDR chipset. I wasn't sure if the DDR 3200 would just run at 266Mhz but be able to run at a faster speed (400Mhz) when called upon.

You haven't lost your knack for thinking ahead apparently. I did something similar a while ago and it's paid off well with the new mobo.

What's even better is you can probably get away with running that 3200 at really aggressive timings (2-2-2) when you use it at the lower speed.

Thank You for the replies. As you may know DDR 3200 will be utilized by the Intel Springdale and Canterwood chipsets. I plan on buying a couple of 512 MB now and use them for these DC DDR boards next year when their prices drop.

Why not get a mobo NOW that will use it as is? And/or see if you can't get a 1.6 up to 2.4 or so...

Cerb, Don't worry I'll see if I can get a 200Mhz with my current setup with the 3200 DDR RAM.
