Quick question about cars.

What happens when you forget to put your car in park before shutting down the engine? What are the adverse effects? Thanks.

None.. you just can't pull out your key.. unless you pull really hard... which I did one time... and had to get a new ignition.

my guess is that the car would stop anyway. Also, it's been stated that it's not smart to try and pull your key out if your car is in "drive"....I'll also tell you that it's not smart to try and force your car into "drive" without having the key in.

No adverse effects, unless the car rolls away. When the engine stops, the transmission loses fluid pressure and the gears disengage.

Nope. It was an old Buick. I don't remember the year and model. He had an automatic. He backed into the spot, left the transmission in reverse, did not set the parking brake, shut off the engine, got out of the car, and walked away. It's not a steep grade. If he had a manual and didn't set the brake, it probably would not have rolled.
