Hey guys. My room-mate and I are hungry. All I have is a $5 bill and he has $5 in a roll of dimes. My question is, can they deny us purchase? Thats all the money we have, we are broke starving college students. Also, I don't feel right giving them coins that would take forever to count. Should we go for it???

Thanks

go for it.. in high school at worked at Weinershnitzel and when someone paid with a roll of coins we didnt unroll and count them, we would have them write their name/address/phone# on it so if it was bunk we could contact them. of course I thought that was always stupid because if someone's going to pay with bogus coin rolls they arent going to put their real contact info

Yeah, money is money. Besides, lots of times the place has to get coins from the bank anyway. If they have an attitude about it, they're jerks--don't worry 'bout it.

The only food in the form of coins I know of is those chocolate coin things you can buy around Christmas.

Can they deny you?....Yes. Shopkeepers are not obligated to accept any currency even if it is legal tender.

Will they deny you? Probably not.

If you feel bad about making them count the coins, go to the bank and have them change it for bills. That's what they're paid to do afterall. Of course it's a little late to do this but if you ever get hungry in the daytime it's something to think about.

P.S. - WTF do you have a roll of dimes?

WTF? They can deny you?

It is friggen coin of the realm is it not? They would have to be prepared to be disrupted and have me thrown out and probably locked up. Then I would have to see what I could do in court.

What you would do in court is lose.

rutchtkim,

I just realized that I've had a roll of dimes sitting here in the desk drawer for about five years. Found money! Thanks for the reminder.:)

I am sure that there are plenty of places that would take you coins. I would go for the ramen or a loaf of bread and a jar of peanut butter at the local grocery store.........

i've paid for plenty of stuff with coins before. back in the day when i was a young lad... i heard the ice cream truck roll by and bought me some italian ice for $.50... all in pennies too. i've also paid for gas with a $10 roll of quarters. i've nickel & dimed mcdonald's on a few occasions. usually when i know i have mostly coins, i always asked the worker "mind if i give u change?". i've never gotten a response other then, "sure, why not". then their jaw usually drops when i unload the wad of coins onto the counter. :D btw, u can't get two orders of chinese food at rutgers for $10. r u forgetting the tip and possible $1 delivery fee? if u decide to skimp on the tip... next time u order... be sure to give them a different name and phone number... or u might get a little extra "seasoning" in yo grub.

EDIT: while on the topic of change, i used to valet park, so i always had WADS of $1 bills. at the time, i moved into a new place, so i had to get my security deposit together. i did not have a bank or checking account then, so pretty much everything was cash or money order. i went to get the money order at a check cashing place, and i asked the guy... "i need a money order, do u mind singles?" he said no problem, so i unloade $450 in singles on him. the dude was counting for like 15 minutes. ;)
