If I buy a car in a different state for use in my state (ny), do I have to pay ny or the other state's sale tax?

it all depends on where you license the automobile.

you pay the sales tax of the state you license it in.

Correct.

Otherwise there would be THOUSANDS of CA/WA people coming to 0% sales tax Oregon to buy a car.

So sorry it's not worth it, it's already been thought of.

I think that's how it goes, not sure about the receipt thing but it seems to make sense.

Are you buying used or new?

hopefully used
but If I can't get a good price, I will try to be patient and wait for several months for a good deal to come buy or buy a new car.
this will be my 1st car which is why I'd rather buy used and I have like less than 30hrs behind the wheel.
unfortunately, I want a hybrid and it's impossible to find 1 for less than 10K
I'm chosing between the prius and the civic. THe prius is ecologically better because I know it has a sulev rating. The civics are an unknown. There are sulev and ulev versions of the civic and there's no way to distinguish between the two except for the cas tank capacity. The the sulev uses 11.9 and rhe ulev uses 13.2. The inside of the civic looks better than the prius, also.
I don't want a ulev.
The cheapest and closest prius I could find is a 2001 model w/ 41K miles for $11265. I checked the vin# and it was a rental car. I'm hoping I can haggle them down to 10K but the current sticker price is good enough. The deaslership is 3mi from me.
The cheapest civic I could find is $15400 w/ 17K miles, the vin# seems to be clean but the dealership is in philly which means I would need to travel to unknown turf and haggle and all that stuff. If I were to go, I'm hoping I can haggle them down to at least $13500. (I gotta find out if it's SULEV 1st  ) if it's not, I'll try looking elsewhere.
Oh, but my friend tells me I need to get insurance 1st. But when I look at insurance sites online, they want to know what car you have. But this kinda creates a circular dependency because I thought
1) you need insurance to buy a car
2) you need a car to get car insurance
umm, can someone help me w/ how this works.
