Quick question about applying wax :)

I have:

1 bottle Meguiar's DeepCrystal Carnauba Wax (but I am guessing carnauba wax is much of a muchness?)

2x terry cloth cotton applicator cloths

1x microfibre wipey-off cloth

1x the other love of my life: http://pics.bbzzdd.com/users/dug777/DSC_02980001.JPG

Last weekend I washed it using a Turtle Wash n Wax (all we have ever used on our other vehicles), and then rinsed/chamoised it.

Since then it has sat in an open carport, so it is still clean, albeit a bit dusty.

Should I just rinse it and chamois, then after it has dried apply wax as per the instructions, or should I wash it again with the Turtle Wash n Wax first, then chamois, then apply wax?

I am not after perfection here, just a good protective coat of wax that beads up nicely when it gets wet and offers a bit of preliminary scratch protection from scrub etc on narrower and overgrown tracks 🙂

All advice appreciated :beer;

I would do a quick wash anywhere you will wax. Yea it may just be dust but when you wax you would be rubbing anything into the paint that did not come off.

Also Meguiar's has a new "wax" ULTIMATE LIQUID WAX. Its not a "wax" but a syn sealer. Last longer then regular waxs. If you can't find that then look for Meguiars NXT GEN TECH WAX.

scrap the wash n wax... get some meguiars gold wash. that wash and wax is leaving something on the paint you don't want. Then, get yourself a claybar and give the car a once over with that... then wax it

but in more direct response to your question. Definitely wash the car prior to waxing it.... especially if you can see contaminants on the paint (dust)

NXT GEN wax here. Goes on extremely easy. Use a foam pad though. Most people say it doesn't last long. I detail my car a lot. A good coat of wax and wash/quick detail spray keeps the car looking showroom new. Might be more work, but the results are great. Might want to start with a clay bar too.

Also.

100K+ miles. NOT garage kept.

If you have not clay bared the car in its entire life (I don't know how old the car is), I would wash and clay bar, then wax.

For protection that lasts a long time, I like NuFinish. I've never had wax last as long... You have to apply one coat, then a month later wash the vehicle and apply another coat. It's been 4 months since the 2nd coat, and mine is still beading water.

I washed it today with Turtle Wax wash & wax so starting now I won't know whether it's the NuFinish causing beading or just the Turtle crap.

i've been very happy with meguire's gold wash, as well as their wax.
step 1: follow directions
step 2: enjoy

i think a clay bar on a vehicle equipped with a snorkel is putting too fine a point on it, so to speak.

and beer to you too!

+1 for NXT. +1 that it doesn't last long. Maybe a month or two..

Thank you all for the feedback, I will wash n wax with the turtle and then wax in short order with the Meguiar's 🙂

As has been said, it's no show pony, and I have to admit I don't even know what a clay bar is 😱

I have no interest in making the car look 'sharp' to the detriment of paint protection, and as such I'm happy to leave the clearcoat unravished and just add to it...after all, it's a few more microns of junk that will help when a razor sharp protea/acacia/eucalypt bush rakes across it 😉

clay bar

from the pic, you can easily tell your paint needs some serious correction. look at the reflection on the front fender. it's all about what you want out of it, but if you are running through rough areas and scraping it with debri and bushes, I understand your point. That said, I don't see the point in even waxing it.

I still stand behind my recommendation for the gold wash. get rid of the turtle wash and wax.

Clay FTW.

Also, dont ever think of just rinsing your car prior to waxing, even if you washed it the day before. A touch-car-wash doesn't count as washing either. By hand with the proper wash mitt only.
Anything else and you risk scratching the paint. Is it not worth the very little amount of extra effort to wash the car?

Thanks folks 🙂

I ended up washing the vehicle with pretty dilute mix of the Turtle wash and wax (just enough to get it foaming). Then chamoised dry, left for 15 mins or so (it's about 32'C here in the shade atm), and then pulled out the wax 🙂

Hard work, but it looks most awesome now 🙂

X2, I was using Zaino stuff for awhile (and it's good) but got tired of the $8.95 shipping charge for anything. I went back to NuFinish, lasts almost as long as Zaino, cheaper, no shipping costs. IIRC these are polishes and contain no carnauba but I'm fine with that, black car I have here in FL carnauba-based waxes (although nice depth to the shine) only lasts 2-3 weeks and in the summer when it's 95 I'd rather NOT be waxing my car..
