Quick question about AGP

I have an Abit IT7-MAX2 motherboard. It has an AGP slot but I can't figure out if it's 2x, 4x, 8x, pro or what. I looked up reviews on google and they all just mentioned that it had an AGP slot. I'm pretty sure the board came out in 2002 if that's any help.

Here's the big list of onboard features include; two serial ATA headers, Ultra/133 IDE RAID, 5.1 audio (including center, sub and optical out), 10/100 LAN, no less then ten USB 2.0 ports (6 onboard, 4 USB 2.0 headers) and finally three IEEE 1394 ports (two onboard, one header). If that's not good enough for you Abit was still able to include four 32 bit PCI slots as well as one 4x AGP port (1.5V lock).

i think that means 4x only.

normal 8x cards should work

4x is fully compatible with 8x & SOME 2x cards like ATI 9200's... most 2x cards won't work however.

Thanks alot, now I'm deciding between a 9550 and a 9600pro, leaning toward the 9550 as I think it was based on the excellent 9700pro.

9550 is a cut down version of a 9500 i believe. it's not a good card, slightly faster than a 9250 or something i think. a 9600pro will serve you better, unless you can find a 256bit 128mb 9500 non pro which can be softmodded into a 9700pro. at these prices, i would go iused though. For $90, you can go 9800pro. the cards are agp8x, but the motherboard will force it to run at agp4x. still, not a big difference. performance difference will be between zero to minimal(something like 0-5% maybe)

Thanks, the nomenclature still gets me sometimes, the only hard fast rule that I know is to stay away from cards with an SE suffix.

how can you tell if a 9550 is a cut down 9700 pro?

it's a 64bit 9500 underclocked ibelieve. even if you heavlily overclock it like 100mhz on the core and memory, it'll still be lower than a stock 9600pro. they cannot be modded into functional 9700pros.
