As i'm sure a lot of you do, i have a ton of spare parts laying around and i have several CDROM drives. I'm just setting up a simple audio system in my office, and i dont want to use the computer to play the music or whatever and i've purchased the sonic impact T-amp (unbelievable) and i've got a speaker in the ceiling. My question is, can i just a spare CD rom drive to play CD's, I have an audio cable to go from CD rom, any idea how to terminate that cable into a phono plug? I know this seems a little rediculous when there are so many better options, but a for a die hard DIYer, this is what i want to do. Thanks...

I don't think the CD Rom will be able to play music without any processor support. Unlike, stand alone cd players, system cd roms uses the system processor to process the data. Of course there are those cd roms which have built in buttons to play and listen to music without system support. I guess if you have this you can try doing what you wanted to do. As for terminating the audio cable, you will just have to make an adapter for yourself. There are three wires on the audio cable with a common ground or return wire.

Hi, Haven't tried it, but should work if the drive has the CD control button on the front panel. CD should log in and then you can start it with the second button and that button will also skip tracks or better. Try it with the speaker or earphone plugged into the front connector first. May not have to make a connector for the back. Back connector probably will need amplified speakers and wont be useful with earphone. Maybe? Good Luck, Jim

Yeah, i thought about that after the OP... the headphone jack on the front would be a much better option... I've built a box to house the T-amp, power supply, CD ROM drive, i added an ipod dock, and an A/V selector to select my input. It has a built in AM/FM radio as well... So i use the AV selector to choose between the computer, the radio, the CD player, or the IPOD and mounted a volume control on the front. Its a pretty sweet set up.. i'm working on getting some pics up, but i think i want to go buy a barebones PC micro case and put it all in there... That would be pretty sweet sitting on my desk. For those of you who havent heard of the SONIC IMPACT T-amps, WOW!!! These make perfect amps for multimedia applications, and even small room stereos, This little $30 dollar gadget sounds better than my $1200.00 ONKYO HT RECIEVER... Just an extra...
