I'm sending my X1000 to Compaq for repairs and I need to know what's the best way of packaging it? From the F/S forums, people have said that using packing peanuts is a very poor choice so should I just use air pockets or bubble wrap? Also, what's the optimal size box I should use? Thanks people.

In a box within another box within another box... ;)

Bubble wrap the crap outta it, put it in a box, then put that box in another larger box with padding. Then you stand a slight chance of UPS not destroying it.

What he said. Go for a box a few inches on each side, then that one inside another with more room than that. I'd say use bubble sheets on the laptop itself (wrap in a plastic bag, BTW, reduces chances of abrasion) and crumpled paper (something thicker than newsprint) in the outside box. Insure it. I'm partial to USPS priority, and with a high ticket item like this, definately insure and possibly certify.

Do not ship it inside a prioriety box like I once had a person do. 2 boxes would be good here with plenty of bubble wrap.

The laptops I have received in the mail were shipped in a box filled with foam cut to fit the computer. You probably can get one of these from a store that specializes in shipping.
