quick q: 24 pin psu will plug into a 20 pin mobo?

i skimmed the sticky at the top and didnt see an answer to this. want to buy a new psu for an older computer but want to have the option to upgrade if needed

Almost always, but you might want to look at the documentation for the PSU.

Sometimes the plug can actually be split into a 20-pin and 4-pin (depending on the model).

I believe some PSU's come with a 24-pin to 20pin adapter for that backwards compatiblity.

It depends on the PSU, most are reverse compatable with 20 Pin motherboards when used with the proper adapter. However there are a few rare exceptions, like TYAN and Supermicro PSU's that have proprietary schmatics cannot be used with an adapter unless you modify the harness or adapter.
