Quick PSU question needed

Hi

I curremtly have a crappy s478 p4 2.4 (533mhz) system with an appropriate PSU

Will this PSU be compatible with a socket 775 mobo or do i need a new one ? i will be running a 975x mobo (ABIT) with a p4 EE 3.2ghz and a 7900GT GS and an IDE harddrive.

I cant remeber of the top of my head what the power is of my PSU. but will i be able to actually fit it (physically)?

any advice would be appriciated as i am ordering today !
Cheers

Your current PSU probably has the 20-pin ATX header. It might fit in a 24-pin (which AFAIK is what all new boards use), but the quality of the PSU might not be up to par. Also, it has to have the 4-pin square connector.

EDIT: All ATX PSUs can fit in a case that claims ATX specification. If it's a small case, or the PSU is long, it might interfere with the top 5.25" drives.

I agree..ATX form factor Power supplies are mostly standard in fit...but not in function. There is no way that I would even attempt to move the Power supply in your old system over. Almost no chance it meets the power requirements and in addition it probably does not have PCI express power support for your new graphics adapter..dont even bother to attempt this. Go to your favorite supplier, I suggest newegg.com and get something in the 500 wat range in a reliable brand such as Enermax, Fortron, Seasonic, Antec, Coolmaster(not to be mistaken for coolmax). Cutting a corner on your power supply with your new system could be a disaster. As mentioned in the previous post insure you get the Power supply the matches your motherboard power connection pin configuration..either 20 pin or 24 pin..although...almost all the new 24 pin connectors are backwards compatible with 20 pin motherboards so it should not be an issue...bottom line..24 pin..which is what over 75% of the powersupplies you will find for sale are now.

Personally I would stasy away from Antec or CoolMaster!
Enermax,Seasonic and Fortron all highly regarded PSU`s!!
Fortron most bang for buck!!

Thats why I would stay away from Antec or Coolmaster!

But let me say if you were to choose one of those they would probably do the job!
