small government can be just as authoritative, if not more, the only thing that is really different is the mechanism by which the authority is welded and by whom.

Small government lacks the economic clout to be authoritarian, unless they're simply outright violently oppressive. That will usually only last so long before the people take garden tools and simply overwhelm the government. Most authoritarian governments depend on consuming a massive percentage of GDP, which is why the direction of this country is so dangerous.
