** Ok so I'm gonna tell him to get a matrox card for his dad. does it really matter between 64 megs and 32?

My friend is building a new comp for his dad who is a graphic artist. He asked me which card he should get since its just 2d stuff, he doesn;t want to spend more than $100.

Should I tell him to get a 256 meg card or 128 meg card with faster memory and core?

i think more RAM is more important for photochop, a faster CPU also helps. how much ram does a video card is not that important

and oh, i think you'll get much useful advices in the "hardware forum"

good luck

a better quality 128meg card. the extra 128mb on a worse card does nothing but trick consumers into thinking it is better. (you will get a better answer in the video fourm)

buy a basic card and invest in more system ram 🙂

I think the only time my card is really used is when I'm using InDesign and want it to display high-quality graphics as I'm working.

unless he is doing some serious CAD/CAM or vector based graphics, then I'd say that the 128MB will do fine; load up on system ram, at least 1 gig imo.

dunno, don't some vid cards cache more stuff in their mem to speed up windows displays a bit? like scrolling a huge pic? eh, i just know some faster cards let you scroll uber mega pixel pics around with total smoothness. course the difference between low end and high end in 2d is getting rather small. just get a mid range card and get gobs of ram. gobs of ram and an a64, its mem performance is pretty good

he's building an A64 system for his dad with 1 gig of ram on 1 stick.

I think I'm gonna tell him to get a Matrox card since all that really matters is color accuracy (according to you guys).

But the question now is is there a difference between 32 and 64 megs of ram on the videocard?

32 and 64 doesn't matter much if you ask me. but matrox... now that would be a little bit too slow and driver support may not be as good as ATI or nvidia

but if it's like a $10 difference, i'd go for one with more ram.

and one stick of RAM? get 2 sticks of 512mb, i think that would actually be faster since they can run in dual channel, and would be much more cheaper.

I'm not building it, my friend is. I just help him find good deals on cases and stuff.

as for the videocard, its like a $55 difference. from 32 and 64 megs.

how can it be too slow? it's 2d.

And Matrox driver support is fine. I'd take their drivers over ones put out by ATI any day of the week.

don't know much about PRO graphics but... wouldn't THIS work?

and i'd really tell him to get 2 sticks of RAM instead of the 1 gig stick. but it's up to him i guess.

if that card is good, use 10% off coupon code: MC Exclusives

hes not going to buy a refurb card and I am not going to suggest it. I don;t think his dad uses cad. Just the usual garphic artist tools.

also the A64 uses single channel memory so 1 stick at 1 gig is fine.

unless he's buying a 940/939 a64.... which is mucho moola... the memory controllers are only single channel anyway.

What resolution does his dad work at? I would think the 32MB would be fine.
