I'm trying to get some work done on my laptop and it keeps stepping down the processor speed. How can I stop it from doing this? It's a 1.4GHz but it doesnt want to run any faster than 599MHz right now. Where can disble to speedstepping feature?

Sounds like your CPU is overheating?

P4s (not sure about P-M's) throttle the clock speed when too hot.

Hmmm, I had thought the processors stepped down their clock speed in an attempt to save battery life.

Are you the one that just bought that laptop at BB? I bought a Compaq Athlon XP mobile laptop and the processor speed would not go over 600MHZ even though I have a XP 2200+ in my lappie. I said fvck the compaq software and formatted with my own copy of XP Pro. Hasn't changed in speed since.

I did just buy a laptop from Best Buy but it is still being configured. The laptop in question is my gf's Inspiron 8600.

Are you really doing a CPU intensive app?

Open up MS calculator, type in 999999999999! and enter. See if the cpu speed changes.

plug in your power cord. I think if it detects that it's not running off on battery it'll go to full speed

no, it still runs at the slow speed if you're not doing anything.

it steps only when necessary.

She was using Picture It! and Pinnacle Studio 8 at the same time. I went into calculator and did what you said and it changed nothing. I followed over to that other thread and downloaded a program and it works fine now.
