Hello,

Basically what I'm wondering about is how will I format my brand new HDD Samsung F1 RE 1TB. Delivery guy just handed it to me seconds ago so I'm about to use it for the first time.

Is it necessary to go for the full format, or is the quick enough?

Depends on how much you trust it. I personally like to do a ~24hr burn-in on any new drives that I get.

I never trust new drives. I've seen several cases where doing a quick format yielded an unstable system or even an incomplete installation. The full format option is the only good option, just use it.

Start it before you go to bed and it will be done when you wake up in the morning.

Eh? I just toss 'em in and quick-format. Then again I don't have any mission-critical needs.

Why not do the full format? It should take about 4 or 5 hours on a 1TB drive. It can also serve as an initial stress test.

That makes no sense, from a filesystem point of view they do the exact same thing. The only additional step in a full format is a write test of every block to see if they're bad or not.

I don't consider my stuff mission critical but I'd rather spend a day or so testing the drive than have to backup/replace the drive right away.

Just to let you guys now the outcome - i did a full format. I felt otherwise I would probably just feel insecure all the time whether it worked or not.

Btw, this drive rocks! Doing 90k-100k in file transfers with AHCI mode set to normal (IDE).

The full format took about 4-4½ hours if i remember correctly.

EDIT

And also if i may say again, this drive rocks. I will purchase a 2nd one next month!
