Quick openion needed - Pentium D805 vs. Athlon 64 3800+ (2.2 Ghz single core)

Hello

Thanks for taking the time . . . if you are in hurry just answer which cpu is faster and by how much???
If you have a few minutes more - read on . . .

I spent a couple of hours trying to decide which one of these cpus are faster and by how much % wise - looked at many benchmarks but they are not even compared directly so still confused . . .

I just sold a htpc with athlon 64 3800+ cpu and got a really good deal on another system with pentium D805 - trying to decide if It will serve my purpose - ie would that be similar in cpu power or more or less - everything else is loaded ie 4gb DDRII, 500GB sata, Nvidia 7600 card, etc . . . I had trouble with H264 decoding with the Athlon machine, it was jerky but that was most likely because of GPU (Nvidia 6150 LE chip builtin to mobo) and only 512MB ram . . . .

I know both of these machines a slow and I can do a lot better with a few bucks more - but I have my reason, the case alone is worth a lot . . and I just need it to decode my Bluray HD- H264 . . . no game etc . . .

Would a Pentium D 805 with 4 GB DDRII and Nvidia 7600 GPU be sufficient ( I won't be able to upgrade the cpu on this mobo)???

Please don't move this posting to Home theater forum - It's about the 2 cpu . . .

Thanks

Its been a while... The X2 is faster I am pretty sure. The Pentium D is half the speed of core 2 at the same clock. If you find X2 vs core two, then double the C2d speed and compare. So if a core 2 ghz = X2 @ 2.2, then you would need a 4 ghz Pentium D. They also run hotter.

Get the X2.

That's true, but the OP says he has a single-core 3800+.

The dual-core 805 is faster than the single-core 3800+.

I don't know about Blu-Ray decoding... I don't recall if the 7600 assists with that.

Thanks . . to both of you . . . still unclear . . . I am starting to think that the 3800+ was faster than d805 atleast according to some online comparison . . . but you guys here know this beeter -------- I will wait for some more openion ----

In older programs/games that only use one cpu core the a64 3800+ will beat the crap out of the pentium d 805. Nowadays lots of programs, not just games, can use 2 cores or more so imo the pentium d 805 is a better cpu today. I don't think the 7600 will accelerate h264 so you may have to look into something like the 9500gt if you find the pentium d struggles with the h264 content.

Benchmarks of those cpus their prime time were mostly single threaded, so yeah you will see the 3800+ beat the D around if you can find any comparison. Nowadays there are more threads flying around, but it still won't make the D "fly".

IMO get a cheap radeon HD 4x50 card and enable hardware acceleration for decoding.
