Quick newbie question, I need help

Here's the situation:
2 computers on Win2k
2 nics
1 crossover cable

How do I connect them all? In the software I mean, this has to be the easiest question ever, but I never had a need for networking or anything before and now I need to move a bunch of stuff from my desktop to a laptop, so any help you can give would be much appreciated..

Plug the crossover cable into the two NICs, set up the computers on the same workgroup, make sure they're on the same submask, reboot them, and they should see each other just fine.

yep...Hoober hit it dead on. especially between 2 win2k boxes, you should have no problem networking them....just make sure you have an account on both boxes (cause you'll have to enter a name and pass to access the shares)...of course, i'm SURE you do, so that was kind of a silly statement. hehehe

OK, slow down a sec, I said I was a newbie

I use a cable connection for my net access, so my workgroup is @HOME on both of them, do I need to change that?

Also, what the heck is a submask and how do I do that?

It doesn't matter if my username and password for Win2k is the same on both computers does it?

nope, doesn't matter if user and pass are same on both machines

keeping both workgroups as @home should be fine

go into network properties from control panel....double click on "tcp/ip for ethernet adapter" (ethernet adapter will be replaced with the name of your ethernet adapter)....under those tcp/ip settings, you will see a place to put in subnet mask....
if you're going to do that, you may as well make up an IP for each machine as well. give 192.168.0.1 to one machine and 192.168.0.2 to the other, and make both subnet masks 255.255.255.0

here's the thing though, you might not have to do this. i assume when you look at tcp/ip properties,it will say "automatically assign an ip address" because you most likely use dhcp with your cable modem...so try JUST hooking the crossover cable up to both machines, and w/out changing anything else, see if they see each other in network neighborhood..if they DON'T, then just do what i said in the above paragraph.

this is prolly confusing, but let us know what other questions you have...and make note of how things are configured NOW, so that if you change anything, you can always get back to where you were

When I setup a crossover deal I had to install the components NetBeui and Client For MS Networks. Maybe I did more than I had to but that's what I was told to do. Screw around with Network and Dialup Connections' Properties for awhile.

Oh, also had to create user account and setup sharing.

yeah, you WILL need "client for microsoft networks" AND "file and printer sharing for microsoft networks" in addition to tcp/ip (sorry , i forgot to add that)

you do NOT need netbeui though
