Quick network question

Platypus

Lifer
If I connect two of my machines together through a router, will I be able to send files over something like MSN or AIM? I tried it last night on a machine with serious windows problems, and it didnt allow me to send or recieve files. However, I will soon be connecting two 2k machines brand new to a router. Will each machine be able to handle file transfering?

why not just share the files and transfer over the network?

for IM programs, you'll have to open the specific ports or something. a big hassle and not always guaranteed to work.

Ok 🙂

Here is the real dirt of what im doing. I figured it would be easy to answer, but this is the process.

Box 1: Win2k(XP 😀)/Mandrake
Box 2: FreeBSD
Box 3: Win2k

All will be connecting to the router.
Box 1 and Box 2 are min.
Box 3 is my father's.

I want Box 1 and Box 2 to be able to share files through DHCP, Box 3 is irrelevant, he just wants broadband access.
Box 1 must be able to recieve instant message files and be able to transfer them in the same fashion. Box 2 is a server, and is also irreleveant.

Dig?

you shouldnt have any probblems, i assume that router is a router/switch you should be fine using any of those programs
