**QUICK** Need to decide on a HDD....

To make a long story short, I installed some software (that Vista Inspirat from CrystalXP.net) and it screwed stuff up royaly. Lost my music, pictures and some video files. Don't ask me how. Anyway, I want to take the 160GB HDD I have now and use it as a storage drive, and get a SATA drive for the OS and proggies. Suggestions would be appreciated. Doesn't have to have large capacity obviously since I have the other drive for storage, but speed would be nice. Browsing Newegg as we speak - thanks in advance....

I should add that I have the ASRock 939 Dual SATAII mobo, I've heard I don't need the SATAII crap. True? Just stick with SATA150?

If it's speed you want, NE has the WD 74GB Raptor on sale. We use that same setup, the Raptor for the OS and Progs, and a Seagate 160GB for storage. Works well, but we're going bigger on the storage drive soon.

The higher speed (RPMs) would be nice, but not a requirement. Don't have lots of $$$ and the one I linked to seems good for the price. Opinions?

I don't see any SATAII cables though, are they necessary? I have a SATA cable that came with my mobo but I think its the standard version.

I'm not sure on the cables......

For you... you could always partition your 160GB to 30-40GB OS and the rest another partition. Then you could reformat and not loose anything. 74GB Raptor is your best option.... SATAII is NOT crap, and has a noticable increase over SATAI. The latter on the other hand has very similar speeds as PATA.

Essasin, I believe it is just the 7200.8 models, excluding 7200.9. Linkage

Ok, so you want cheap and fast, that WD you linked to is good, BB used to practically give those away after MIR, theres a lot of 'em out there and I haven't heard of many problems w/ them.

Yes, I've heard good things about Fortrons. The one I got has the 120mm fan on the bottom. I have an Antec 350 Smartpower right now that hasn't given me a lick of trouble. But I didn't want to risk it with another HDD in there along with an overclocked 6600 256MB, tv tuner, modem, 1GB of mem and an overclocked A64. At least I don't have a floppy sucking power... 😉
